PTA Cultural Arts Program

 

The Stratford Academy PTA and its cultural arts program support the school mission through its commitment to enrichment of the school curriculum, spirit and culture through the arts. To guide the cultural arts program, the PTA developed a vision statement for the Arts with goals for the cultural arts program. The vision for the cultural arts at Stratford Academy includes the following goals:

  • To enhance appreciation, awareness and enjoyment of the arts

  • To provide school-wide performances and other cultural events

  • To expand cultural arts opportunities and enrichment for students during the school day

  • To increase involvement in the arts by students, faculty, parents and others


Advanced Learning Program (ALP)

The Advanced Learning Program is a district-wide program for academically gifted students. The ALP center is located in Stratford Academy's Johnson House and is available to identified students in grades 4, 5, and 6 who qualify on tests and other screening criteria. The Advanced Learning Program provides a setting where academically gifted students have opportunities to interact, interchange ideas, solve problems, and enjoy the benefits of peer support. It is a full-time program designed to provide a specialized learning environment suited for the needs of students who have superior intellectual ability, a record of high academic achievement, and exceptional application of learning skills.

 

Art S.M.A.R.T. Program

The Art S.M.A.R.T. Program (So Many Artist/Achievers doing the Right Thing) is a special art enrichment and incentive program, unique to Stratford Academy. The program offers students in grades 3 and 4 the opportunity to participate in a special art project that is different than what they are doing in their regular art class.   The Art Smart Program rotates a new group of students every 3-4 weeks and takes place during the regular school day.  With the support of the child's regular classroom teachers, students are selected for the program based on the following:

·                            Student is an active participant in his/her regular art class

·                            Student follows directions well

·                            Student exemplifies the six pillars of character

·                            Student is able to keep up with all schoolwork missed while out of the

                regular classroom

F.A.M.E. Program

 

The F.A.M.E. Program (Fostering the Arts and Movement Education) is another unique arts enrichment and incentive program offered to Stratford Academy students in grades 5 and 6. Students are exposed to a collaborative curriculum which is simultaneously taught by a team of specialists. The F.A.M.E. Program rotates a new group of students every 3-4 weeks and takes place during the regular school day place during the regular school day.   With the support of the child's regular classroom teachers, students are selected for the program based on:

·                            Student is an active participant in his/her regular art and music classes

·                            Student follows directions well

·                            Student exemplifies the six pillars of character

·                            Student is able to keep up with all schoolwork missed while out of the regular    classroom

             to attend the F.A.M.E. classes



 

Adventure Challenge

 

The Adventure Challenge is an after-school program that is offered by Stratford Community Services and Stratford Parents’ Place. It uses non-competitive games, activities, and discussion to give students the chance to be part of a fun and exciting group while learning about teamwork, cooperation, and trust. The Johnson Challenge is one of the many components of the Family Resource Center at Stratford Parents’ Place.

Four 7-week cycles of the Johnson Challenge will be conducted during the school year – two cycles for boys and two cycles for girls. The group meets once a week from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. A healthy snack is provided. A late bus is available for students requiring transportation home.

Nature's Classroom

 

Participating 6th grade students spend three days in Nature’s Classroom where they are offered a unique educational experience. The program uses motivational learning and the outdoors for learning experiences that cannot easily take place in the traditional classroom. At Nature’s Classroom, children participate in activities such as examining life in lakes and swamps, investigating weather, colonial and Native American skills, making a movie, participate in confidence-building group challenges, and much more. The trip to Nature’s Classroom takes place in November.


 

 

School Play

 

Each year, Stratford Academy – Johnson House puts on a tremendous performance of a Broadway musical under the direction of Mr. Bruce Hirsch. All 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students are invited to participate in this production. Tryouts begin in October and rehearsals begin as soon as major roles are determined. Parents are welcome to assist with ticket sales, makeup, costumes, sets, sound, lighting, etc. There are five performances which take place in June, following several months of preparation. The Stratford Academy play has earned a reputation as a quality production and is enjoyed by audiences from all over town.

 

 

 

Sister School Visit

 

The Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority (CRRA) operates the Garbage Museum in Stratford where it provides a program that offers culturally diverse sister school pairing. The museum offers this program to third grade classes of Stratford, Bridgeport, and Shelton.

There are three visits associated with the program:

  • Activities at the first sister school

  • Activities at the garbage Museum

  • Activities at the second sister school

The museum offers to pay for busing and any educational materials associated with the museum visit. Educators from the museum will be present at each of the three visits. Topics include Native American culture, herbs, composting, recycling, etc.
